BROADWAY MAYBE
The debut album from British singer Henry Patterson, Broadway Maybe, unfolds as the internal monologue that runs through every performer’s mind at the start of their career. Set in an audition, the record moves between the real and the imagined: the prologue and closing moments place Patterson squarely in the room, but once the band begins to play, the world shifts inward. What follows is the voice inside a performer’s head, by turns hopeful, anxious and self-questioning, capturing the emotional turbulence that accompanies the pursuit of a life onstage.
In the album, Patterson revisits some of musical theatre’s most familiar songs, but not as museum pieces. Instead, they’re reclaimed and reimagined through jazz arrangements that strip them back to their emotional core. Many of these standards are so frequently performed that their original versions feel untouchable. Here, they’re approached with intimacy and vulnerability, creating space to hear the music again as if for the first time.
The themes that surface are universal to anyone who has stepped into an audition room: imposter syndrome, ambition, self-doubt, bravado and the thrill of believing, even briefly, that you might belong there. Patterson relates to every lyric he sings, particularly in the album’s closing reflection: “Who am I anyway? Am I my résumé?” It’s a question that lingers.
Part introduction, part reinterpretation of the canon, Broadway Maybe invites new listeners into the world of musical theatre while speaking directly to those who already love it. It’s the story of a career that hasn’t happened yet. Broadway? Maybe.
